JOB SUMMARY:

Support the Lumibird Photonics USA R&D Engineering Group by designing, prototyping, characterizing, testing and troubleshooting flashlamp and diode-pumped solid state laser systems and optical subsystems as a member of the product development team. The engineer works with an interdisciplinary design team to develop commercial, industrial, medical and military systems and standard product variants. Additional responsibilities may include supporting Sales, Production and Service, when required to address technical questions or issues related to their area of expertise.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform laser technology development by doing feasibility studies, testing optical design concepts and prototypes
  • Collect and analyze relevant experimental data
  • Provide regular comprehensive data summary
  • Generate comprehensive test reports of tests conducted, data collected and associated observations or conclusions
  • Evaluate test results and data, and make recommendations for improving performance and manufacturability
  • Participate in the design of prototypes to reach a given set of specifications
  • Test and validate prototype laser designs using lab setups and applicable equipment
  • Build and test specialty laser systems and subsystems
  • Propose technical specifications and validation test plans for optical components, assemblies, and laser systems
  • Interface with optical component suppliers
  • Interact with engineers of all disciplines (optical, mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing) to implement new laser designs
  • Participate in design reviews for products under development within the engineering group
  • Support the transition of new designs into production by designing/building test fixtures and generating test procedures, work instructions, manuals and other related documentation
  • Interface with customers as required on specifications, applications and installations
  • Create part numbers and generate Bills-of-Materials in the Enterprise Resource Planning software

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent, OR Master’s degree in the same plus 3 years of experience OR Bachelor's degree in the same plus 6 years of experience with 2-3 years of experience involving solid state lasers.
  • Proven team player that works well with others in Engineering, Production, Sales, etc.
  • Troubleshooting skills, Resiliency
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment
  • Analytical skills- proficiency math and physics fundamentals
  • Experience with Optical design software such as Zemax ™, FRED, Cod-V, Tracepro
  • Experience with technical programming such as MatLAB™, Python
  • Experience with Q-switched solid-state lasers (Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, etc.)
  • Experience with harmonic frequency generation using non-linear optical materials
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, power meters, beam analyzers and other standard optical test equipment
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, applicable CAD tools, etc).
  • This position requires the use of information which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Optical design experience involving solid state lasers.
  • Experience with Fiber lasers
  • Experience with Optical Aberrations, imaging
  • Programming skills for data collection and analysis
  • Knowledge of ISO-9001 or 13485, or equivalent Quality System

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be capable of working in front of a computer screen for long periods of time
  • Standing and working at optical tables in laser labs for extended periods of time
  • Good close-up vision for inspecting optics and other laser components
  • Ability to use fingers and hands to manipulate small objects
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
