MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING MANAGER

JOB SUMMARY:
The primary role of the Manufacturing Engineering (MFG ENG) Manager is to ensure the continued manufacturing success and Quality of existing products, as well as coordinating the transfer of Engineering project developments through the New Product Introduction (NIP) process to Production manufacturing. In addition, the MFG ENG Manager will also serve as a Product Manager for high volume Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) products.
The MFG ENG group is a multidisciplinary team (mechanical, optical, electrical, and firmware engineers) that provides support to Production with improved processes, manufacturing fixtures and equipment, trainings, and work instructions with the goals of transferring new technologies and products from R&D Engineering to production, providing oversight of the new product development to ensure manufacturability, and overall improving the bottom line of the company by working to increase margins, cut costs, and assist the manufacture of products with minimum defects and short lead times.
PERSONNEL SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Manufacturing Engineering is responsible for the direct supervision of those employees in the Manufacturing Engineering department. This includes leading and managing Manufacturing Engineers, Technicians and Machine Shop employees.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide oversight of the NPI process, which focuses on the transfer of Engineering development projects to full production management.
- Analyze discrepant material data for improvements in manufacturing techniques/processes.
- Support implementation of 5S manufacturing processes through design and identified improvement opportunities.
- Perform qualification testing for new suppliers of solid-state laser components and process changes.
- Support Engineering and Production in the transition of new products to Production.
- Oversee and proof work instructions for optical / mechanical laser subassemblies, as well as system level integration instructions.
- Oversee creation of assembly drawings and manufacturing documentation.
- Support research and documentation of components for regulatory requirements.
- Support the implementation of Engineering Change Notifications (ECNs).
- Oversee the MFG ENG group for the disposition of Non-Conforming Materials (NCMs).
- Provide oversight of support of component obsolescence.
- Convert existing manufacturing documentation to modern CAD documents – as needed.
- Facility Infrastructure/Equipment maintenance and improvements.
- OEM Project Management Responsibilities:
- Work with the Engineering project team to define the new product development schedule, key tasks, critical milestones and ensure these milestones are achieved.
- Coordinating across multiple teams – Engineering, Production, Quality, Customer Service, and Sales - to ensure full support of OEM products.
- Create and manage schedules to complete projects.
- Manage project meetings and design reviews.
- Track project costs and budget.
- Provide project updates on a regular basis to the various stakeholders.
- Identify and manage the project risks related to cost, resource allocation and technical issues.
- Advise the management team on project, technical, team and customer issues.
- Any other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Ability to work within time parameters.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Computer literacy/ Knowledge of software applications such as Word, Excel and Power Point to produce reports and graphs is required.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical and optical specifications using drawings and manuals.
- Ability to use CAD software including SolidWorks and Altium Designer.
- Ability to apply 5S Principles.
- Understanding and application of AS9100/ISO9001/ISO13485
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering related field.
- A minimum of 8 years of design experience in design or manufacturing
- Experienced team builder capable of leading, navigating, inspiring and motivating their team of multiple engineering disciplines through difficult or complex projects.
- Experience working to project specifications and completing tasks per defined schedules.
- Knowledge of supply chain principles and the use of ERP systems preferred.
- Background in Lasers/Laser technology preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to use fingers and hands to manipulate small parts.
- Excellent vision is required to perform job.
- Must be capable of working in front of a computer for long periods of time.
