JOB SUMMARY:
This position focuses on fiber laser development for medical lasers at Lumibird Photonics USA, Inc. The Optical Engineer will develop, build, test, and operate prototype laser systems for various medical applications and environments. They will support all areas of R&D and production, including process development, material management, and quality assurance, ensuring a consistent flow of products that meet specified requirements. Responsibilities include everything from external part fabrication to final product packaging.

- Oversee the laser and component technicians.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Characterize and Test: Characterize fiber laser components and systems, and conduct reliability testing to ensure performance and durability.
- Software Analysis: Analyze optical systems using Zemax or RP Photonics to optimize design and functionality.
- Optical Testing: Perform optical tests using equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs), oscilloscopes, power meters, M2 test set, and beam profilers to measure system performance.
- Vendor Interaction: Conduct technical interactions with vendors for optical, electrical, and mechanical components, ensuring specifications and quality standards are met.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, and other cross-functional teams to integrate and validate laser systems.
- Experimentation and Analysis: Design and conduct experiments, perform detailed data analysis, and troubleshoot product defects to improve system reliability and performance.
- Documentation: Develop and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including qualification plans, validation reports, component specifications/drawings, RMA reports, test procedures, and work instructions.
- Production Support: Coordinate with production personnel during manufacturing transfer, provide technical support, and ensure smooth transition from development to production.
- Hands-On Troubleshooting: Perform hands-on troubleshooting for various laser and fiber laser architectures and their optical components to resolve technical issues.
- Supplier Support: Provide technical support to suppliers, conduct vendor audits, and ensure compliance with quality standards.
- Design Evaluation: Evaluate new product designs, assess design changes for manufacturability (DFM/DFA), and analyze cost impacts to optimize production efficiency.
- Process Improvement: Develop and implement procedures for manufacturing cells, improve manufacturing processes, and utilize ERP software to streamline process flow and enhance product performance.
PREFERED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Experience with resonant-cavity or MoPA fiber laser designs.
- Understanding nonlinear effects and gain dynamics in fiber laser system.
- Knowledge of packaging and reliability standards for medical or industrial laser systems.
- Capability to work independently in a fast-paced R&D environment.
- Experience with laser modeling and diagnostic tools (e.g., Liekki, ZeMax, RP Fiber Power, Optical Spectrum Analyzers, Oscilloscopes).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- A Master's or Ph.D. degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience developing fiber laser systems.
- Strong expertise in fiber preparation and splicing, especially for large-mode-area and structured fibers.
- Demonstrated ability to create and optimize custom fiber splicing programs on platforms such as Fujikura, Fitel, Vytran, or similar systems.
- Familiarity with Fiber Laser behavior, back-reflection sensitivity, and optical system integration.
- Demonstrated experience in leading projects and managing cross-functional teams.
